Welcome to Kirkwood

The original St. Louis suburb. Still the standard everyone else measures themselves against.

Kirkwood was the first planned residential commuter suburb west of the Mississippi River. That's not trivia. It's a statement of intent. The people who built this community more than 170 years ago were trying to create something worth staying in. And judging by the fact that families are still fighting over homes here, they got it right.

The downtown is anchored by a historic 1893 train station that still runs daily Amtrak service, which tells you everything you need to know about how seriously Kirkwood takes its own identity. Geyer Road draws people in with locally owned restaurants, boutique shops, and the kind of farmers market that becomes a Saturday morning ritual before you even realize it's happened. The Greentree Festival has been filling Kirkwood Park every fall since 1961.

The housing stock is exactly what you'd hope for: Victorian homes, craftsman bungalows, mid-century ranches, and a handful of new construction options for buyers who want the neighborhood without the renovation project. Over 280 acres of parkland thread through the community, including Kirkwood Park's aquatic center, ice arena, and amphitheater. And then there's the school district, consistently ranked among the best in Missouri, with a high school that has been called the best public school in the state. People move to Kirkwood for a lot of reasons. They stay because of all of them at once.

Kirkwood School District: What Families Need to Know

The Kirkwood School District has been educating students since 1865, which makes it one of the oldest districts west of the Mississippi. The reputation it has built in that time is well earned. Kirkwood High School is consistently ranked among the best public high schools in Missouri, known for its college-prep curriculum, award-winning journalism and arts programs, and one of the most storied athletic rivalries in the state: the Turkey Day Game against Webster Groves, played every Thanksgiving since 1907.

The district runs five elementary schools, two middle schools (Nipher and North Kirkwood), and Kirkwood High. Private options nearby include St. John Vianney High School, an all-boys Catholic prep school with strong academics and athletics, and St. Gerard Majella for K-8 families.

What It’s Like to Live in Kirkwood

Downtown Kirkwood pulls you in and keeps you there. The historic train station sits at the center of it all, flanked by restaurants, the farmers market, and the kind of foot traffic that makes a place feel genuinely alive. Citizen Kane's Steak House has been a local institution for decades. The Magic House, St. Louis Children's Museum, draws families from all over the region and happens to be right here in the neighborhood.

Kirkwood Park is the outdoor anchor: sports fields, tennis courts, a lazy river aquatic center, an ice arena, and an amphitheater that hosts events through the warmer months. Grant's Trail, an eight-mile paved path, connects riders and walkers to the broader St. Louis trail network. Highway 44 and Interstate 270 make the commute manageable. Downtown St. Louis is about 20 minutes on a reasonable morning.

What makes Kirkwood feel different from a lot of suburbs is the sense that the community actually uses itself. The parks are full. The downtown is walkable. The events are attended. It's a neighborhood that functions the way neighborhoods are supposed to.
